Onesies are a great way to protect your dog’s sutures after surgery. Studies show that using a post surgical garment such as a onesie will greatly reduce the recovery time of your dog after having an operation.
If you have a dog that was just spayed or neutered, using a onesie will act as a preventative measure for keeping your dog away from their stitches. If your dog has access to their sutures, then they could reopen the wound, causing infection.
Onesies are an excellent e-cone (Elizabethan collar) alternative, because they are much easier to put on your dog, you don’t have to worry that you might be choking your dog because you have to keep the device so tightly around their neck, and it provides significantly more comfort for the dog than a bulky cone.
Even a softer cone isn't because it isn’t rigid so your dog will probably still be able to access their injury, and they aren’t very secure around the neck.
Using a protective garment instead of a hard plastic cone will provide full body coverage. If you have a dog or a cat who is bad about overgrooming then you should look into purchasing a onesie for them. A onesie prevents licking, and it prevents chewing at their skin which will eventually cause an injury on its own. A onesie will act as a barrier to your dog and they will not be able to get close enough to their skin to continue overgrooming.
